emotions

i just wanted to check in briefly, i guess just to ground me a little. it is weird, because this is the last thing i should be thinking about, the computer, but i guess i just want a little fantasy and something to distract me from real life at the moment.

i have been going through so many different emotions this weekend. one of my very best friends just got married on saturday. we have lived in different cities for several years, so the first time i met her fiance was 2 days before the wedding. wow. they are really great together and i am glad they are starting a life together. her wedding was so beautiful. she lives in asheville and the wedding was on a farm surrounded by mountains. the town is very cute and somehow smells like cinnamon. the whole day was kind of cloudy and gray and she was really worried about the forecast for rain. but, at 5:00, when the wedding started, the clouds cleared and beautiful puffy clouds and blue sky appeared. there was not a dry eye in the house when she walked down the aisle.

*****
now i am visiting my family as we spend time with my grandmother who is in hospice. i am trying to remember her as she was and thinking of all the good times we had together.

happy accident

hello friends.

i just wanted to share a sweet little brooklyn story that happened to me yesterday.

on my way home, i was taking some pictures around my neighborhood. i was looking up, shooting a window when i heard a man's voice say, "why don't you take a picture of me?"

so i did.

he introduced himself as santo, a long time brooklyn resident. he said it must be his lucky day and he asked if i would take a picture of one of his sculptures. so, i said sure and went into his house to take a picture of what turned out to be a bust of leonardo decaprio. he said he wanted a picture so he could send it to leo. he showed me all his other sculptures and told me about his life. he was a sculpture at age 18 in italy, but could not make a living at it when he moved to the US. he took it up again at age 74, now he is 79.

he had a great little studio shed in his backyard where i also took his picture. i told him i would bring him the prints and he said he would make me italian coffee. he had a lovely wife who i met as well. things like this make me love my little town.

rainy monday

thought i would share more inspiration from my new book today. i am going to try to post some of my own photos inspired by the book throughout this week. take a look here and here.

this is my contribution to liz's paper crane project. she has already sent out over 500 cranes! she said she picked mine especially for me, and i think it's perfect. the colors and pattern are very me. they even mentioned her project on the flickr blog. way to go, liz!

take a look at these beautiful paper crane mobiles i found in the beautiful danish elle interior that astrid sent to me.

in other inspiration today, take a look at shari and lisa's documentary project this week. each installment has been wonderful, i especially like this one.

i'm off to finish up some orders and listen to the never-ending rain.

coming home

i got inspired by mav and had to make a trip to a couple of my favorite book stores. this time i spent a lot of time in the cookbook section. i did not realize how influenced i am by the simplicity of the photos in these books. much less fuss and less worry about perfection than cookbooks produced in the US. so, of course i had to buy one. it's called come home. isn't that sweet. i wish i could read the recipes, but i guess i will have to settle for the pictures.

humm...hopefully after the weekend i will have some of my own photos inspired by the book to show you.

here is some weekend inspiration to keep us holding on until spring makes it's way to the northeast.

bacon addict

i have a new addiction. it is called sweet basil bacon. i wish i had not discovered this recipe, because now i can't stop thinking about it. i made it yesterday for the first time and today i kept thinking about when i was going to make it again. so, i had to make it for dinner. whoa. i need to put a stop to this.

i must pass this recipe on, and i hope you all have more control than i do.
so, here ya go:

sweet basil bacon
{recipe adapted from cook what you love}

8 slices thick-cut bacon {i actually used turkey bacon}
2 Tbsp light brown sugar, packed
1 tsp dried basil

preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
arrange the bacon slices on the sheet pan. bake the bacon for 10 minutes
and remove from oven.
turn the bacon over and sprinkle with the brown sugar and basil.
{i also sprinkled with a little turbinado sugar-because i am also addicted to it}
bake for an additional 5 minutes or until crisp.
{don't get it too crispy, because it will firm up after you take it out of the oven.
you may also need to adjust the seasonings to your liking}
drain on paper towels and serve.

the brown sugar caramelizes slightly and the basil keeps it from being too sweet, it makes it a little peppery. ummm..that first bite is so good!

the recipe also states that it is excellent on a blt.

hope you had a happy easter. i'm sure this guy did. such a cute hat! i think i ate too many cupcakes and mini eggs.

so, today it's back to work. i WILL update my portfolio today! i decided to tape all my images to a wall too make it easier to work with them. i used to lay them all out on the floor, but henry found this too tempting.

so i will leave you today with more fun things to peruse:
~fall/winter '07 collection at jovovich-hawk. i love all the hair accessories.
~finnfactor design {found via shiny squirrel}. i love this and this.

friday thoughts

oh, i am still not fully back in the swing of things. maybe it's because nature is playing tricks on me lately.

snow.
in april.
ugh.

i don't like this. not one bit. at least they were just flurries. i am so ready for spring. it's hard to look at pretty sundresses and sandals and wonder when you'll ever be able to wear them.

i really enjoyed shari's color post yesterday, so i thought i would join in.

colors and my everyday life...

brown: my new putty colored smock from h&m, dark chocolate covered matzoh, my well-worn winter boots

blue: my winter gloves i had to pull out of my bag today

green: yogi green tea super anti-oxidant, my breakfast,lunch,and tea book

yellow: egg yolk from hard-boiled eggs, cadbury mini eggs

cream: buds from a cherry blossom tree begging to come out, hydrangeas from the corner deli

red: paul and joe lipstick 051, rununculus, frozen raspberries

orange: henry's fur, georgia red clay {on my mind}

grey: the sky, my comfy jeans

that was fun.

i will leave you with some friday inspiration. today it's all about people.

solitude:
spaces to grow.
the simple beauty of scarf and hair.
jasmin.

and togetherness:
franzi yelda.
...................
one more thing...has everyone seen the new products for sale at selvedge? gorgeous. oh, and it looks like a new issue is out. and it looks amazing, as usual.

back in the swing of things

hi folks. my mom and nephew were here for a visit and left this morning. we had a great time, but i can definitely say that i could be happy never going to midtown manhattan again.

i'm glad to be back home in brooklyn. even if it is raining. it's nice to be able to catch up and not have to get anywhere. my nephew is becoming quite the little writer. he left me with this short story.

i just wanted to drop in today with some inspiration, because i need to look at something pretty.

the above photos are from lorenzo pesce.

i can't remember where i found these 2 links, but they are both full of beauty.
