the favorites

these are a couple of my favorite photos from my trip. the top one was taken by me and the bottom one was taken by my nephew {age 7}. he loves taking photos with my camera. for this one, he purposely pulled the camera down to get this effect. i don't know where he got the idea, but i really love it. it is my dress hanging on a door.
here are my flickr favorites for this week. i am loving them. all calm and tranquil.
have a great rest of the weekend.

interview:ditte isager

since i started this blog, i have wanted to focus on sharing with you the photographers i love and who inspire me everyday. i have been an admirer of ditte isager's work since i first saw her images in gourmet magazine {the images above are from the august issue}.

this year, she was named one of pdn's 30 new and emerging photographers to watch. i definitely agree and am delighted she agreed to answer a few questions for me.
so, sit back, grab your cup of coffee, and take a moment to learn more about this inspiring photographer.

1.How long have you been a photographer?

4 years

2. How would you describe your work?

Nordic simplicity with out being cold minimalist

3. What is your favourite thing to shoot?
I’m very lucky shooting all the things there interest me, Interior, food and Travel, and get to work with people with the same passion.

4. Do you have a different approach when shooting people vs. still life or food?Which do you prefer?

Not really, of course it is different to shoot a tomato soup and a portrait but by the end of the day, it is all about light, composing, cropping and timing

5. What types of cameras do you shoot with? Which is your favourite?
Pentax & Linhoff, love them both

6. Do you shoot film or digital or both?
film
7. Where do you live and how does this influence your work?
Right now I’m in between, I just moved from London where I have been for 2 years, and am moving to NY 1st of September, in the meantime I’m traveling or in Copenhagen. I grew up in Copenhagen and off course the Danish Design have had a huge impact on my work. It is a very design oriented country where your home means a lot, and people are very much into Interior and architecture. Is is efficient in a very relaxed way.

8. How often do you shoot for yourself vs. for a client?

I mostly work for clients but I do private project from time to time, and I really enjoying when I have the time for it.

9.What are some of the differences (if any) between shooting for an American magazine and for others around the world?
Budget is the key, American magazines are bigger so they can afford a bigger team, it makes life much easier for me as I can concentrate on the pictures, instead of putting up wall papers etc. But because they are bigger they are also more controlled, and I think sometimes you can go more crazy in some of the European magazines style wise.

10. What are some of your favourite magazines?
Bloom, Elle décor, Gourmet.

11. Having traveled around the world photographing, where are some of the favorite places you have visited?
Kenya for the beautiful landscape in the bush where the nights are so quiet and the only light is the moon, I’m a big fan of Karen Blixen and completely .understand her fascination for the country.India I love all the madness, but can't stay too long, have to get out of the noise and craziness. For holiday always Italy.

11. Do you show your work in galleries?

no
12.What are your future plans as a photographer?
Moving to NY
13. Who are some of your favorite photographers {past or present}?

Sally Mann, Irving Penn, Martyn Thompson, August Sander
13. What inspires you?

Films, a walk down the street, places, people, art - specially old paintings and of course travel

14. Describe your perfect day.
a coffee by the canal in Copenhagen in the morning, having friends and family over for cozy dinner & wine, the more the merrier.......as everything always is very planned, I really enjoy days where I can improvise

15. What is your favorite breakfast?
Soft boiled egg with Rye breadditte

thank you so much to Ditte who so graciously agreed to this interview. you can see more of her work here and here.

i love shells

hello friends. i had a lovely, short little break. i met my family at the beach for some sun, seafood, and shell collecting. it was nice to get away, but it is also nice to be back.

after living for a while in new york {5 years}, it is hard to adjust to life other places, even when you are visiting. i really missed being able to walk everywhere and not having to sit in traffic. it is also strange to shop in such a gigantic grocery store with so many choices for so many things we really do not need. not to knock life in other places, i know there are other definite advantages, i am just content to be where i am for now.

i am really excited to share an interview with a wonderful photographer later this week..probably thursday.
good night.

vintage photo inspiration

photo on left from walker evan, photo on right from dorthea lange.

i love looking at the photographs from the depression era for the fsa. 2 of my favorite photographers from this time are dorthea lange and walker evans.

i also loved seeing the denim spread in blueprint this month. they have been showing outtakes lately on their blog and talking about their influences for the shoot. i love the outtakes! the 4x5 b&w polaroids really give the photos a great vintage look, reminding me of the fsa photos.

speaking of denim, i was enamored with martha's latest creations.
oh, and take a look in the august issue of real simple. the card society is featured in the
"why not?" section in the front of the mag. congrats, mav!

gotta run...i have 2 (!) photo shoots today.

Monday, July 9, 2007

hum, blogger would not let me add a title..annoying.
anyway...i finally went to see alyson fox's work this weekend. it is so amazing in person. every bit as lovely as you would imagine. i loved seeing the book pieces in person. if you are in the brooklyn area, you should check it out. and then you should eat here, it's across the street. the brunch and the bloody marys are amazing.
so, i have decided to postpone my shop update until the end of july. there are so many things i should be working on this week before i go out of town next week, i think it is better to wait. so, i may be a little mia this week. we'll see how it goes.

++++++++++
here are a few links to tide you over:
iben hoej {found via shari's interview with paula}. amazing clothes, mood and photos.
belle & boo. very sweet.
katie brown for target.. love this green color. i want this and also these.
and here's a little something i found. you may recognize one of two of these artists.
le bouton as a featured seller on etsy.
oh, check out this spoon collection. i'm jealous.

have a good day.

wow-inspiration

top photo: my dirty window sill, bottom photos: from dwell magazine, july/aug 2007

isn't it exciting when you discover something that takes your breath away. sometimes photography has a way of doing this to me. i recently discovered the amazing work of leslie williamson.
these photos above are from dwell magazine, but you must look at her website to really see the beauty of them. the photos are from an upcoming book{to be released in 2008} featuring photos of designer's and architect's homes. i was blown away by her photos under the people section and the ones for erica tanov. i just love everything about her work. i can't say enough. you must see for yourself.
seeing this feature in dwell reminded me of how much i love seeing the insides of other people's homes. it is fun to see the little nooks and crannies of intimate spaces. in dwell, leslie explains, 'i found the more i photographed, the tighter and closer the images became."
tomorrow i will share some little artwork from around my apartment.
oh, and monday i will have a new shop update. i am really excited about something new i have been working on for a little bit. can't wait to show you!
now, i am off to read shari's interview.
have a good day.

found objects

some new little treasures found on a walk yesterday. the linen is vintage irish linen from go fish!.
i found out i am going to the beach in a couple of weeks, so now i am on the search for a new bathing suit. not my favorite activity. i really wanted to order this one, but upon further investigation, i discovered the shipping is almost the same price as the suit. $50 to be exact. that is a little excessive. i know postage rates have gone up, but i don't think i can justify that. can't they just throw it in an envelope for a few dollars? if anyone happens to see any other cute ones online let me know. i think i am going to try to get a one piece, though this can be difficult with my long torso. like i said, not my favorite activity.

on to what i do like. eating and shopping:

5 boroughs ice cream. sounds interesting.
nau. looks comfy. read about their mission.
port2port. summer print set:)
a pig in provence. lovely little book.
shopSCAD. now in atlanta.

have a great day.
